Who takes the ball
Tactics · Beginner
Explanation
openThe most common trap in beginner doubles is the ball in the middle. It flies exactly between you — and then one of two things happens: either both go for it and get in each other's way, or nobody goes because each thinks the other will. In both cases the point is lost.
The solution is a simple ground rule: for every ball it's clear who takes it. The easiest way is a short call. Whoever takes the ball calls „Mine!“; whoever leaves it to their partner calls „Yours!“ or „Leave!“. A single word at the right moment prevents the collision and the lost points from hesitation.
A simple rule of thumb helps too: whoever is better positioned and reaches the ball more comfortably takes it. Usually that's the one to whose side the ball flies, or the one who can take it with the stronger forehand. Sort this out calmly before the match too: who takes the middle when in doubt?
The most important thing is to call early and clearly. A late „Mine!“ comes too late. Whoever decides early and says it loudly gives their partner the certainty to focus on the rest.
The middle ball is like a door two people want to go through at once. A short word settles who goes first — and no one collides any more.

openMine or yours
Goal
Assign balls in the middle clearly and early to one of you.
How to do it
- Have a third person feed you balls in turn, including deliberately into the middle between you.
- For every ball, one of you calls „Mine!“ or „Yours!“ early and clearly.
- Stick to the rule of thumb: whoever is better positioned or has the stronger forehand takes the ball.
- Make sure the call comes early, not at the last moment.
- After each ball, check briefly: was the assignment clear, or was there hesitation?
Self-check
Do you call early enough, or does the coordination come too late? Is it clear on every middle ball who takes it, or is there still hesitation and near-collisions? An early, clear call solves almost all middle-ball problems.
