The jump smash

Technique · Expert

Explanation

open

The jump smash is the most powerful development stage of your attack. You jump off to meet the Speeder even higher and earlier — and gain a steeper angle and more pressure through it.

The gain lies in the height. The higher you meet it, the more steeply you can hit the Speeder downward, and the less time the opponent has. The jump lifts you above the point of contact you would reach on the ground, and so combines the high point of contact with the force of the smash. That's why it builds on taking it early: it's about the earliest and highest possible contact.

The sequence joins takeoff and stroke into one movement. You jump off, meet it at the highest point of the jump with the full whip, and land ready to play again. The stroke happens in the air, at the apex of the jump.

Here the jump smash is at the same time a physical matter — and here care is important. Jumping off and landing loads the legs and joints heavily. The soft, controlled landing matters more than the jump height. Build the jump smash up step by step, on a solid foundation of strength and footwork, and get qualified guidance for the athletic part if in doubt. A cleanly landed, controlled jump beats a wild, high one.

The jump smash resembles a volleyball player rising to attack: the height creates the angle from which the ball falls unreachably downward. But every good attacker lands soft and controlled.

And as with the smash on the ground: consistency and return before maximum pace. After the jump smash you have to be back in balance and ready at once.

Height for the angle

Goal

Play the smash from a controlled takeoff — with a clean, soft landing.

How to do it — Part 1

  1. First practice the takeoff without a Speeder: jump off loosely, indicate the striking motion at the highest point, land soft and controlled.
  2. From the start, pay more attention to the soft landing than to the height.

How to do it — Part 2

  1. Have high balls fed to you and hit the smash from the takeoff, meeting it at the apex.
  2. Aim steeply downward — use the height you've gained for the angle.
  3. Land ready to play and in balance after every jump smash.
  4. Increase height and pace only slowly and on a solid foundation.

Self-check

Do you land soft and controlled, or hard and off balance? Do you meet it at the apex of the jump? If the landing isn't clean or you feel unsure, reduce the jump height and build up more slowly — and bring in qualified guidance for the athletic part.

Wrap-up

The jump smash combines height, angle, and force. It's only worth it with a clean landing and patient buildup — control comes before height.
