Specific endurance — the interval character

Fitness · Advanced

Explanation

open

Crossminton is not a long-distance run. It is a constant alternation of short, high-intensity rallies and small breaks in between — and that across an entire set. This is exactly the pattern you have to train if you don't want to collapse toward the end of a set. A steady, continuous endurance alone isn't enough for that.

The key lies in the interval character. Your body has to learn to summon an intense load, recover partially in the short break, and then immediately go full throttle again — over and over. This ability to repeat intense actions is something other than holding out steadily for a long time. It blends the enduring and the fast-powerful side.

The good part: you train this interval character best in the game itself and in game-like forms. Whoever deliberately plays intense rallies out fully, uses the short break for partial recovery, and then takes on the next one again with full commitment trains exactly the right pattern. In addition, a solid base endurance helps as the foundation the intervals sit on.

Your endurance in Crossminton is like a battery that charges up briefly in the breaks. The trained battery is the one that recharges quickly and immediately delivers a lot of power — not the one that only holds steadily for a long time.

Patient buildup remains important. Intense intervals are demanding — increase them slowly and give your body time to recover between sessions.

Play intensely, recover briefly

Goal

Train the interval pattern of Crossminton — full rallies, short partial recovery, full again.

How to do it

  1. Play rallies out deliberately with full commitment, instead of cutting them short.
  2. Use the short break afterward to breathe deliberately and recover briefly.
  3. Take on the next rally again with full commitment, before you're fully recovered.
  4. Use game-like forms in which intense phases and short breaks alternate.
  5. Keep the movement quality high and end the session when it clearly drops.

Self-check

Can you summon the intensity again after the short breaks, or does every rally get weaker? If the quality drops sharply, you need either more base endurance as a foundation or longer breaks. Increase the intensity slowly and allow yourself recovery between demanding sessions.

Wrap-up

Whoever trains the interval pattern is still there in the third set when others collapse. That is often the difference that decides close matches.
